What is papain used for?

Papain is used in biochemical research involving the analysis of proteins, in tenderizing meat, in clarifying beer, in removing hair from hides before tanning, and in enzyme-action cleansing agents for soft contact lenses. It is also used in toothpastes and cosmetics and in preparations of various remedies for indigestion, ulcers, fever, and swelling. A related enzyme also produced by papaya is chymopapain, which has different characteristics of mobility and solubility; it is used to shrink or dissolve ruptured disks in certain kinds of lumbar spine injuries, and otherwise as a digestant of protein.

Is papain safe to eat and skin?

When taken by mouth: Papain is LIKELY SAFE when taken in amounts commonly found in foods. It is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken in larger amounts as medicine for up to 9 weeks. Taking very large amounts of papain is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. In excessive doses, papain may cause severe throat and stomach damage in some people.

When applied to the skin: Applying a solution of papain in appropriate doses for up to 20 minutes is POSSIBLY SAFE. However, applying raw papain or papaya fruit to the skin is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Skin contact with raw papain can cause irritation and skin blisters in some people.

Is papain toxic?

Our study indicates that papain is not toxic and/or mutagenic in bacterial systems. Indeed, papain revealed to be an antioxidant agent against H2O2-induced damage.

Is papain an antibiotic?

Papain and bromelain are proteolytic enzymes derived frompapaya and pineapple, respectively. These enzymes are widely used in medicine and in the pharmaceutical and food industries, but while some studies have described their antibacterial action, no studies of the Alicyclobacillus spp.

Does papain whiten your teeth?

Papain usage:

  • For shingles (herpes zoster): An enzyme combination containing papain for 14 days.
  • For sore throat (pharyngitis):Lozenges containing 2 mg papain, 5 mg lysozyme, and 200 I.U. bacitracin for 4 days.
