Product description

Glycolic acid is an AHA or alpha hydroxy acid, like other ingredients in this category, can act as a water-binding agent and, when properly formulated, and as an exfoliant. In itscapacity as an exfoliant, it can help shed dead skin to renew skin’s surface, visibly softening the signs of aging, particularly from sun damage. Glycolic acid is one of the most effective and well-researched forms of AHA.

It is water soluble, and naturally occurs in sugar cane, sugar beets, and pineapples. Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the glue that holds together skin cells hence its exfoliationaction of the topmost layers of dead skin. Because it helps encourage cell turnover, it can be used regularly to treat and reduce scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles.

Other AHAs include lactic acid (made from milk), mandelic acid (made from almonds), and malic acid (made from apples). However of all the AHAs, glycolic acid has the smallest molecules and so penetrates the skin deeper than the other AHAs.

Glycolic acid can be found in concentrations from 5 to 30% and the higher the concentration, the more potent the solution of glycolic acid. Using a lower concentration and building up over an extended period of time will help the skin become accustomed to the strengths with less irritation.

Glycolic acid sun sensitivity: All AHAs including glycolic acid increase the skin’s photosensitivity, so you must wear sunscreen if you plan on using an AHA. Glycolic acid benefits include powerful exfoliation for better skin texture, reduction in skin scars, spots, and surface wrinkles and fine lines.

Applications

Glycolic acid is a very popular treatment for many reasons, including:1

Anti-aging: It smooths fine wrinkles and improves the skin’s tone and texture.

Hydration: It plumps the skin and prevents it from getting dry.

Sun damage: It fades dark patches caused by sun damage and protects collagen from the sun.

Complexion: It brightens the skin when used regularly.

Exfoliation: It prevents ingrown hairs and makes pores appear smaller by helping the skin shed dead skin cells.

Acne: It cleans out pores to prevent comedones, blackheads, and inflamed breakouts.

Using Glycolic Acid with Other Ingredients

Certain ingredients work better with glycolic acid than others do. Check the guide below before combining it with certain products.

Glycolic acid and retinol: These two ingredients are extremely powerful and should only be used together if you have very tolerant skin. If you actively use retinol and your skin is used to it, you may be able to slowly start incorporating glycolic acid.

Glycolic acid and vitamin C: This combination can increase collagen production and smooth skin, but it’s best to stagger application to keep skin from getting irritated. Apply vitamin C in the morning and glycolic acid at night.

Glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid: Since hyaluronic acid loads up skin with moisture, it makes for an excellent pairing with glycolic acid. It’s easiest to look for a product that combines both, but you can also layer serums.

Glycolic acid and hydroquinone: Since hydroquinone can cause a lot of irritation, most professionals recommend staying away from combining it with glycolic acid.

All in all, glycolic acid is one of the most powerful ingredients in skin care and can be used in different ways, including as a daily spot treatment. Whether you want to treat acne or experience potent anti-aging properties, you’ll be able to find a glycolic acid product that suits your needs.

How to Use Glycolic Acid by Product Type

Glycolic acid is easy to use because there are so many ways to incorporate it into your skin care routine. As a rule of thumb, only use one glycolic acid product at a time to avoid irritation and incorporate it into your evening routine since it makes skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Glycolic Acid Face Washes

If you’re using a glycolic acid face wash, it should be the first step of your evening routine. Since glycolic acid face washes generally have a lower percentage of glycolic acid than a serum or lotion, they’re safe to use every night.

Glycolic Acid Toners and Pads

Glycolic acid toners and pads are another great way to experience the benefits of this powerful ingredient. Like a face wash, they have a low concentration of glycolic acid, which means they’re safe to use nightly. Toners or pads would be the second step of your routine after cleansing your face

Glycolic Acid Serum

If your skin can tolerate either a glycolic acid face wash or toner/pads, you may want to consider switching to a glycolic acid serum. Since serums have a higher concentration of glycolic acid, it’s better to start in small amounts. This should follow your normal cleanser and toner/pads and can even be mixed into your moisturizer.

Glycolic Acid Lotion

A glycolic acid lotion is another great option for incorporating the ingredient. It’s great for people with sensitive or dry skin because the lotion ingredients will provide more nourishment to the skin. Apply the lotion after any serums in your routine.

Glycolic Acid Peel/Mask

Glycolic peels and masks are the best way to get the strongest dose of the ingredient since the concentration is usually much higher than any other product. Use a glycolic peel or mask once a week at night and always make sure to read the directions thoroughly since each product can differ. Usually, you’ll use a glycolic mask or peel after cleansing and before all other steps in the routine so that the rest of your products absorb even better.
